Handwriting
At Holtsmere End Infant and Nursery School, we recognise that strong handwriting foundations are essential to children’s confidence, communication and future learning. Across Early Years and Key Stage One, pupils are taught to develop correct pencil grip, letter formation and fine motor control through engaging, purposeful practice. Handwriting is embedded across the curriculum to support early writing fluency, independence and pride in presentation, ensuring every child is equipped with the skills needed for successful lifelong learning.
Early Years
In the Early Years at Holtsmere End Infant and Nursery School, we value mark making as a vital first step in developing early writing skills. In Nursery, children strengthen their fine motor skills through a wide range of practical and creative activities that build hand strength, coordination and control. In Reception, children begin to develop correct letter formation and handwriting habits through the Little Wandle handwriting programme, providing strong foundations for confident and successful writers.
KS1
Writing is carefully sequenced, taking into account the recommendations of the DfE’s Writing framework and through the HFL Essential Writing guidance, ensuring children develop the skills to write with purpose, creativity and increasing independence. Children are exposed to high-quality texts, which act as models and inspiration for their own writing. They are supported to develop transcriptional skills through the teaching of phonics and spelling, alongside the Letterjoin Handwriting programme, which promotes correct letter formation and fluent handwriting.
