History at Holtsmere End Infant and Nursery School

At Holtsmere End Infant and Nursery School, we aim to inspire a love of history by providing a high-quality, engaging curriculum that sparks curiosity about the past. Through the study of significant events, people, and places from Britain and the wider world, pupils develop a strong sense of chronology and begin to understand how societies have changed over time.

Our approach encourages children to ask questions, explore evidence, and think critically about history. Learning is brought to life through storytelling, role-play, artefacts, and meaningful links to both local history and global events. By making connections across subjects such as English, Art, and Drama, we ensure history is a rich and relevant part of the wider curriculum.

As pupils progress, they develop key historical skills, including enquiry, interpretation, and understanding cause and effect. They gain a deeper appreciation of their own heritage and the world around them, building a sense of identity and belonging.

By the end of Key Stage 1, children leave Holtsmere End as confident, inquisitive learners with a secure foundation in history, equipped to explore the past and understand its importance in shaping the present and future and see themselves as history makers.
