EAL - English as an additional language
Our school is proud to be a vibrant, multi-lingual community where 23 different languages are spoken. We celebrate the rich cultural diversity of our pupils and families, and we are committed to supporting all learners with English with an additional language (EAL) so they can thrive socially, emotionally and academically. 38% of our learners are currently EAL. We are also fortunate that some of our team are native Italian, Polish and Romanian speakers and can provide translation support if needed. Our website also provides a translation feature so that all information can be shared with all of our families.
Our dedicated team of teachers and learning support assistants are well equipped to support children with EAL in making accelerated progress. We provide a language-rich environment and there are plenty opportunities for talk and interaction to develop confidence and fluency. We use assessment materials from The Bell Foundation to carry out termly summative assessments of language proficiency, ensuring that support is targeted and progress is closely monitored.
